Avoiding the low hanging poop

July 28, 2009 by Jared Goralnick

We Love Dogs, pooping photo from Flickr user Rick There are few expressions I’ve picked up as quickly as “low hanging fruit”—such a simple and expressive analogy.  And yet, it stinks.

All tasks are not created equal.  Those easiest to complete often deserve to be most avoided.

What should we work on first?

Cold showers for the sake of productivity

July 19, 2009 by Jared Goralnick

Shower (a strobist photo by Sean McGrath)For two weeks, I’ve only had cold showers.  I think I’m better for the experience: they’ve become a symbol for just how easy it is to get through things I don’t look forward to.

Here are a few quick lessons learned from this.

2009, part 2: ideas for making this next chapter a promising one

July 3, 2009 by Jared Goralnick

Chapter 2Independence Day 2008 was a turning point for me.

It may not have been yours, but this holiday is almost exactly halfway through the year.  It may be worthwhile to pause and plot out your next chapter.  I think it’ll again be a turning point for me.

3 DC must-sees that have nothing to do with productivity (and everything to do with living) – NOTE: this weekend only

June 18, 2009 by Jared Goralnick

The Philosopher Kings I’m leaving town for a couple months.  In the mean time, I’ve taken in some of the best that DC has to offer, and I hope you won’t miss out.

I recently saw a play and a film that hit me, and there’s one more coming up.  So even though I don’t usually write about this, I want to share—fyi, DC only for now.

How to find balance…in 13 minutes

June 8, 2009 by Jared Goralnick

Balancing Act I haven’t blogged lately because I’ve overcommitted.  When I figure out how to say “no” to more things, I’ll be sure to write about that.  But I have figured out how to make better use of the time I do spend working and relaxing.

The following is a video of me from WordCamp Mid-Atlantic talking about both productivity at work and balance in life.  Though the presentation was initially geared toward blogging, there are 13 minutes I’ve highlighted that I hope you’ll enjoy.

May 11, 2009 by Jared Goralnick

Clay Collins, photo by me I interviewed Clay  in February.  He talked about why he moved on from a success that didn’t fit him, and his approach toward his next (now pretty big) endeavor.

In the interview below you can skip right to the best snippets about balance, education, and social media.

Dominoes and Pillars: when to be productive and when to slow down

April 13, 2009 by Jared Goralnick

Dominoes, by Mirko Macari It’s tough reconciling a want to be productive with a need to seek out happiness.  We’re often told to balance work and pleasure, but it’s easy to misjudge what we can handle.

An analogy between dominoes and pillars has helped me to better understand how I spend my time.

Looking out the side

April 4, 2009 by Jared Goralnick

Pensively taking it all in from the train window I’ve been on trains and planes a bit lately, where there’s a crucial difference from driving: you can’t quite see where you’re going.

It’s weird at first, until you start to enjoy a different view.  It got me thinking—most of life is spent looking forward.  Perhaps too much of it is spent looking back.

I often forget that the train will keep moving, and in only one direction while I’m aboard.  While it does, I think I want to spend as much of that ride as possible looking out the side.

Nine simple techniques and technologies for a productive relationship

April 1, 2009 by Jared Goralnick

image Valentine’s Day was great this year, but I haven’t had enough time for her since.

So I’ve been thinking: I’ve optimized my email workflow and CRM strategy, but ultimately I’m going to spend the rest of my life with one person.  I’d better ensure I have a workflow and tools for that relationship.

A step back from online participation to look at other paths

February 19, 2009 by Jared Goralnick

Factory It’s easy to see Twitter and blogging as necessary ingredients to getting a message out, building thought leadership, or acquiring customers.  There are thousands of examples of this.

But I think there are just as many examples of success without transparency or online participation.  Before your diet consists solely of the 2.0 Kool-Aid, it’s worth thinking it through.
