I spent the weekend before last working on taxes, and I look forward to the occasion every year.
But it wasn’t just a weekend of ledgers, receipts, and loopholes. It was better, and the lesson could be applied to many other things.
It was the one time I know my dad will be in town every year, just the two of us. Though the purpose is ostensibly to work together on my taxes, it always ends up being a good time. I get to learn from him, better my business, and have a partner in what would otherwise be the worst part of the year. And of course, we eat good food and catch up.
Another type of project I really don’t enjoy is the annual cleaning/tossing/organizing that we all have to do. My dad commented on how much better the garage was looking, which itself was the result of a weekend project with a friend…in exchange for working together on a similar project at her place.
If there’s something you really don’t want to do, why not rope someone in and make a weekend out of it? If I enjoy my taxes, just think how much it could help with whatever you’re putting off.

That’s fantastic. Sounds like you have a pretty cool dad.
What a great idea and perspective. My wife does our taxes with her dad, and I wonder if she’s ever put it into those terms. I’ll pass this along.
