Looking out the side

April 4, 2009 by Jared Goralnick

Pensively taking it all in from the train window I’ve been on trains and planes a bit lately, where there’s a crucial difference from driving: you can’t quite see where you’re going.

It’s weird at first, until you start to enjoy a different view.  It got me thinking—most of life is spent looking forward.  Perhaps too much of it is spent looking back.

I often forget that the train will keep moving, and in only one direction while I’m aboard.  While it does, I think I want to spend as much of that ride as possible looking out the side.

Actually this reminds me of a thought I sometimes have on jetliners: we passengers only get to see a few clouds in a small section of the sky sideways, and I imagine what an incredibly exhilarating view the pilot must have looking at over 180 degrees of sheer open space to the front and sides from the cockpit. It’s not so much about seeing where you’re going as having an unrestricted wide angle view (pretty much like the “I’m flying!” scene at the bow of the Titanic in the movie).

Pilots (and Kate Winslet) have all the fun!
